Navigating Bali: Dos and Don'ts for a Safe and Connected Experience with BaliSIM2U eSIM

Bali's mesmerizing landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality draw many people to it. However, like any other travel hotspot, you need to be mindful of various things to ensure a pleasant stay.

As an Australian who has lived in Bali since 2017, I have gathered alot of knowledge that I want to share in this guide. While informative, it is only a guide and is not a definitive list of dos and don'ts.

Dos

Respect Local Customs

Let's first understand Bali. First of all, Bali is more famous than the country itself, Indonesia.

Bali is a province in Indonesia and the biggest island. Although the majority of the Indonesians are Muslims, 83% of Bali people identify themselves as Hindus. It is, therefore, deeply rooted in Hindu culture.

When in Bali, respect their local customs and traditions. Dress well when you visit their temples, and always ask for permission before you take photos of locals or sacred sites.

Have a Reliable Internet Connection- E Sim Bali

If you plan to visit Bali, you will need good internet speed to do various things such as ordering a taxi, finding a restaurant, or keeping up with your friends and relatives on social media. ESims provide good internet speeds.

You cannot rely on public Wi-Fi, which can be slow sometimes as many people use it. Also, many places with public Wi-Fi are favorite spots for criminals to hack people’s computers.

Also, eSims will save you from high roaming costs and slow speeds. If you are looking to buy the best eSim online, consider these Telkomsel esims in Bali. Not only do they have big data plans for people who would like to stay longer in Bali, but they operate on the best mobile data network, Telkomsel.

Bargain Wisely

Bargaining is common in Bali, especially at markets and street vendors, and Indonesians do it to get good deals on items they wish to purchase.

Tips for Bargaining in Bali

  •         Before you start to bargain, know the actual price of the item
  •         When bargaining, do so respectfully and remember that haggling over small amounts is not worth it.

Stay Hydrated

Bali has a hot and humid climate, so stay hydrated, especially if you plan to be active during the day. Carry a bottle of water. It will keep reminding you to drink water when you are thirsty, and it is the best way to stay hydrated since it is sugar-free.

You can also carry a reusable water bottle and refill it at trusted water stations. Water-rich foods such as oranges, watermelon, and cucumber can also keep you hydrated.

Practice Safety Precautions

Bali is generally safe for tourists, but you need to be careful. Tourists are a target of criminals, especially in crowded areas.

Therefore, secure your belongings. If your hotel has provided a safe, use it. If a beach will have a locker, secure your valuables there.  Avoid walking at night in unfamiliar areas, be careful of people who offer prices of products or services that seem to be good to be true, and be mindful of traffic when crossing the streets.

Explore Responsibly

Bali's natural beauty is a major attraction for many visitors. Explore its attraction responsibly. Here are tips for exploring Bali as a responsible tourist:

  •         Avoid animal attractions that are unethical; These are animals kept in poor conditions such as overcrowded housing, animals that look weak or
  •         Reduce pollution; don't litter the beach, bring your bag when shopping, and turn off electronics when you are not using them.

Wear a Helmet When Riding Your Motorcycle

Motorcycle accidents are common in Bali due to some locals driving under the influence of alcohol, poor road conditions, and even aggressive riding. Therefore, wear a helmet when riding one. In case of an accident, it will prevent a brain injury.

Take Out Health/Travel Insurance

Many people come to Bali without adequate protection. Travel insurance is affordable and a great way to protect yourself from theft, illness, cancellations, and many other scenarios. Enjoy your stay, and know that if something goes south… you are covered.

Don'ts

Disrespect Sacred Sites

Most of Bali's people are Hindus, so the island has numerous temples and religious sites with significant cultural and spiritual value.

Do not respect these sites that they consider holy by taking indecent photos, stepping on their offering, or touching the objects they consider holy.

Engage in Illegal Activities

Bali has strict laws regarding drugs, vandalism, visa violations, and other illegal activities. Those who engage in such behaviors have faced severe consequences, that includes imprisonment or deportation.

Disregard Local Etiquette

Politeness and respect are appreciated alot in Bali. Always greet locals with a smile and a polite "hello" (or "salamat pagi" in Bahasa Indonesia) and avoid raising your voice or showing anger in public.

Don’t Drink Tap Water

Yes, you have read that correctly. Do not drink tap water, as it is not treated as it is overseas. It may contain impurities or microorganisms. Therefore, it is safer to drink bottled water.

Don’t use ATMs in Mini-Marts or on the Street.

Bali is no exception when it comes to ATM skimming. To stay safe, use ATMs only in bank branches that have a guard and other security features, such as cameras.

The guard will be easy to spot since he or she will wear a white or blue official-looking shirt. Avoid using ATMs in deserted places.

Don’t use Unauthorized Money Changers.

You have read that correctly: Don't use unauthorized money changers. They have many tricks to scam your hard-earned money. You will know them as they have an exchange rate much better than the official one. When a deal is too good, walk away.

Avoid exchanging money at a deserted place, late at night, or at a random shop. An authorized money changer has a guard who will ask for your passport or personal details to fill on a form. It looks like a bank. If you need help with the place, ask around or search online.

Don’t Flash Cash/Valuables Around

As a developed country, Indonesia has people who turn to petty theft to survive. Therefore, don’t flash your cash or valuables around; otherwise, you will end up in tears.

Trust us; we see this every day: cameras, wallets, and phones being stolen, and people are left crying. Bali is a fairly safe place. However, use your common sense.

 Do Not Walk Around Naked

Bali is known for its beaches and hot and humid climate. Many people would love to walk half-naked, but it is disrespectful and offensive to locals. Please dress appropriately and respect local norms.
